ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday directed authorities to cancel the licences of petrol pumps that fail to facilitate registered beneficiaries of the Prime Minister’s Fuel Relief Programme, as more than 15.5 million citizens have signed up for the subsidy scheme.
The directive was issued during a meeting chaired by the prime minister to review progress on the programme, according to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office.
Shehbaz expressed satisfaction with the progress and transparency of the initiative, saying that simplifying the registration and subsidy redemption procedures had led to an increase in registrations and enabled more deserving citizens to benefit from the facility.
He said the technology-based and transparent subsidy scheme for deserving citizens would prove to be a game changer for similar public welfare initiatives in the future.
The prime minister also appreciated Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja, Federal Secretary for IT and Telecom Zarar Hashim Khan and their team for developing an effective monitoring system and dashboard for the programme.
During the meeting, officials briefed the prime minister that a total of 15,519,282 citizens had registered under the scheme so far.
Of these, 15.06 million were motorcycle owners, while 449,000 were owners of vehicles with engine capacities of up to 800cc.
The briefing further revealed that 63,153,685 fuel subsidy tokens had been issued, of which 59,445,347 had been redeemed by beneficiaries.
Payments amounting to Rs28.6 billion had been made under the programme as of November 4, 2026, officials said.
The meeting was also informed that separate call centres had been established for consumers and petrol pumps to provide information about the scheme and address complaints.
The prime minister’s directive to cancel the licences of petrol pumps denying subsidised fuel to registered beneficiaries is aimed at ensuring that eligible citizens receive the relief without unnecessary obstacles.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Economic Affairs Minister Ahad Khan Cheema, Climate Change Minister Musadik Malik, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik, Minister of State for Finance Bilal Azhar Kayani, Prime Minister’s Special Assistant Tariq Bajwa, Special Assistant on Energy retired Lt Gen Zafar Iqbal and government officials attended the meeting.
