Pakistan Kissan Ittehad (PKI) on Wednesday hinted at a protest in Islamabad to press for the commencement of crushing season within the next 10 days.

The farmers’ body chairman Khalid Hussain Banth lambasted the sugar mill owners for failing to start the crushing season on November 01 and flayed the government’s delay in fixing the official sugarcane support price for the season.  “Normally, crushing schedules are set to begin between November 01 and November 15, but millers have deliberately delayed opening their facilities,” he added.

He said PKI had been urging the government to clear the export of 1 million surplus sugar to ensure mills have the liquidity to pay farmers on time and prevent a revenue collapse.

Because of these persistent delays, he said, the PKI would hold nationwide demonstrations, including a protest in Islamabad, to protect the livelihoods of the farming community.
