MUMBAI: At least 13 people were killed and 25 others injured in a tragic road accident in India after a passenger bus carrying people to an engagement ceremony collided with a truck in Maharashtra state.
According to Indian media reports, the accident occurred on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad National Highway in Maharashtra’s Palghar district.
Officials said the bus was traveling from Bapugaon to Dhaniwari, where passengers were heading to attend an engagement ceremony. More than 40 people were reportedly onboard at the time of the accident.
Reports indicated that the bus was allegedly moving on the wrong side of the highway when it crashed into a truck. A motorcycle was also caught in the collision.
The impact of the crash was severe, resulting in the deaths of 13 people at the scene, while 25 others sustained injuries of varying severity.
Rescue teams and local authorities rushed to the site shortly after the incident and shifted the injured to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.
Police have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident, including reports regarding the bus allegedly traveling in the wrong direction.
Road accidents remain a major concern in India, where speeding, traffic violations, poor road conditions, and reckless driving frequently contribute to deadly crashes.
Maharashtra Chief Minister expressed deep sorrow over the incident and announced compensation of 500,000 Indian rupees for the families of those who lost their lives.
Authorities said efforts are ongoing to provide medical assistance to the injured and support to the affected families.
