NEW YORK: New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani has said that Islamophobia continues to pose a serious threat to Muslim communities across the United States following a deadly shooting incident at a mosque in California.

According to international media reports, a shooting took place at the Islamic Center in San Diego, California, resulting in the deaths of three people, including a security guard. Reports also stated that two young suspected attackers allegedly died by suicide after carrying out the attack.

Police officials described the incident as a hate-motivated crime. Investigators said the suspected attacker had reportedly taken three firearms from his mother’s house and had expressed racist and extremist views in a written message discovered after the incident.

Reacting to the tragedy, New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the attack highlighted the continuing dangers faced by Muslims in the United States due to rising Islamophobia and hate-driven violence.

“Islamophobia remains a threat to Muslim communities across America,” Mamdani said in his statement.

He urged Americans to stand united against hatred, fear-based politics, and religious discrimination.

“We must confront Islamophobia and stand against the politics of hate and fear,” the mayor emphasized.

The shooting has sparked renewed concern about hate crimes targeting religious minorities and places of worship in the United States.

Community leaders and civil rights organizations have called for stronger action against religious extremism, racial hatred, and violent ideologies.

The incident in San Diego has also intensified discussions regarding security measures at mosques and other religious centers across the country.

Meanwhile, former US President Donald Trump also condemned the shooting, describing the incident as deeply concerning.

Authorities in California continue to investigate the motives behind the attack, while law enforcement agencies are examining whether the suspects had links to extremist groups or online hate networks.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and several Muslim advocacy groups have repeatedly warned about increasing incidents of Islamophobia, anti-Muslim rhetoric, and hate crimes in recent years.

Analysts say attacks targeting religious communities often create fear and insecurity among minority groups and underline the importance of promoting tolerance, coexistence, and interfaith harmony.

The San Diego mosque shooting has prompted condolences and solidarity messages from political leaders, religious organizations, and rights groups across the United States.
