RAWALPINDI/TEHRAN: Pakistan’s Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir is visiting Tehran on an official trip, the military’s media wing said on Monday, as Iran confirmed plans for talks involving officials from Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement issued from Rawalpindi on Monday that Munir, who is also chief of the army staff, was visiting the Iranian capital for an official visit.

Earlier, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said during a press briefing that the planned four-country meeting would address regional issues, including Israel’s expansionist policies, the situation in Lebanon and the US war against Iran.

Baghaei said the proposal to convene the meeting had come from Munir and that Tehran had agreed to it following the Pakistani military chief’s offer.

Iran confirms regional security discussions

Two people with knowledge of the matter earlier told Reuters that senior officials from Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye were scheduled to meet Iranian officials in Tehran on Monday to discuss regional coordination.

Saudi Arabia was expected to be represented by Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman, while Turkiye’s intelligence chief, Ibrahim Kalin, was also expected to attend, according to the sources.

Baghaei confirmed that the discussions would involve members of the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement and focus on regional developments. He also said a Qatari delegation was in Iran, without providing further details about its visit.

The Saudi government media office, Pakistan’s military media wing and Turkiye’s Foreign Ministry did not immediately respond to requests for comment, Reuters reported.

Regional tensions and Makkah defence pact

The planned talks come amid heightened regional tensions, including attacks on Saudi Arabia by Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi movement and the ongoing US-Israeli offensive against Iran.

Munir visited Tehran last week, where he met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and other senior officials. Iranian officials told him during the visit that Tehran would not hold talks with Washington until its demands were met, according to Iranian media.

Pakistan has played a key intermediary role between the United States and Iran. Earlier mediation efforts helped produce an interim peace agreement in June, but the deal quickly unravelled as fighting between Iran and the United States resumed weeks later.

Ministers from Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye held an emergency meeting in Riyadh earlier this month and agreed to ensure the “rapid deployment” of military forces and capabilities in Saudi Arabia.

The three countries signed the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement in August. Under the pact, an armed attack on one member is considered an attack on all.

The agreement’s first article states that the parties shall use “all necessary means” to eliminate threats to one another’s territorial integrity, sovereignty or internationally recognised borders, according to a text seen by Reuters.

Turkiye’s parliament began efforts to ratify the agreement last week, while Pakistan approved the pact last week.
