ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has rejected allegations by the Afghan Taliban regime regarding civilian casualties attributed to its counter-terrorism operations, reaffirming the country’s right to defend itself against terrorist attacks originating from Afghan territory.
In a statement, the Foreign Office said that disinformation and misleading narratives would neither obscure the threat posed by terrorist networks operating from Afghanistan nor absolve the Afghan Taliban regime of its responsibility to prevent Afghan soil from being used to plan and launch attacks against Pakistan.
“These attacks have resulted in more than 3,500 casualties in 2026 alone,” the statement said.
Citing reports by relevant United Nations mechanisms, including the Monitoring Team, the Foreign Office said the Taliban regime continued to shelter a large number of terrorist organisations with impunity, including the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), also referred to as Fitna al Khawarij, and the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), referred to as Fitna al Hindustan, along with their affiliates.
It said these organisations continued to pose a serious threat to peace and stability in the region and beyond.
“Thousands of Pakistani civilians have been martyred because of terrorist attacks which have been planned, financed, supported and carried out from Afghan soil, all under the watch, patronage and active facilitation of the Afghan Taliban regime,” the statement said.
“No responsible state can remain passive when its civilians and security forces are repeatedly targeted,” it added.
The Foreign Office said that Pakistan’s actions in response to terrorist attacks had been undertaken in exercise of its right to self-defence, in accordance with the principles of necessity and as a measure of last resort.
It maintained that the actions had been directed exclusively against terrorists and their logistical support bases in Afghanistan.
Pakistan’s response was proportionate to the level of threat and strictly adhered to the principles of distinction and precaution, the statement said, adding that the scale and scope of the action reflected restraint in view of the severity and frequency of terrorist attacks faced by the country.
The Foreign Office rejected any suggestions to the contrary.
It urged the international community to hold the Taliban regime accountable for failing to fulfil its obligations under relevant UN Security Council resolutions and other commitments to prevent Afghan territory from being used as a launchpad for terrorism.
“Pakistan reserves the right to take all necessary measures in order to safeguard its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the safety and security of Pakistani nationals,” the statement said.
Pakistan also condemned Houthi ballistic missile attacks targeting Saudi Arabia’s Makkah and Madina regions, including areas near the holy sites, reaffirming its commitment to the kingdom’s security under its defence cooperation agreements.
