ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday launched a programme to provide 500,000 Chromebooks and internet facilities to talented students from schools and religious seminaries across Pakistan over the next two years.

Addressing the launch ceremony, the prime minister said the initiative marked the beginning of a journey to empower the country’s talented children and equip them with modern technology and skills to compete internationally.

“Talented sons and daughters are Pakistan’s real asset,” he said, stressing that students would receive Chromebooks strictly on the basis of merit and ability.

The package includes a schoolbag and an internet device to help students access digital learning resources.

Shehbaz said intelligence and talent should not be limited by poverty or wealth, adding that providing children with modern technology and skills was a shared responsibility.

He said the initiative would enable students to pursue online education and benefit from electronic libraries from their homes.

The prime minister also recalled that 600,000 laptops had been distributed to students on merit over the past 10 years.

Investment in education vital for Pakistan’s future

Addressing the ceremony, Federal Education Minister Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui said Pakistan was taking steps to meet changing educational requirements and striving to secure a respected place among nations.

He said investment in education was essential for strengthening the economy and shaping the country’s future, adding that past successes, failures and decisions offered important lessons.

Siddiqui stressed the need to adapt to changing requirements concerning the quality, objectives and delivery of education.

He said investment in education was necessary for Pakistan to earn a respected position in the international community and the region.

The minister also said Pakistan had covered decades of progress in a single year, moving beyond a perception of international isolation to playing a mediating role in the region.

Officials highlight digital skills and youth empowerment

Rashid Minhas, chairman of the TT Care Foundation, said the organisation wanted to contribute to the future of Pakistani students and help them become creators in the digital world.

He said the initiative was an investment in the country’s future and its talented young people.

Chairman of the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme Rana Mashhood said the prime minister’s vision was to provide young people with dignity, encouragement and opportunities.

Referring to digitisation initiatives in Punjab, Mashhood said digital systems had been used to monitor school performance, while a mechanism had been introduced to rank districts on the basis of merit and performance and encourage improvement.

He said the prime minister believed genuine progress would be achieved only when all parts of the country developed.

Mashhood also highlighted the role of Daanish Schools in providing deserving students with opportunities to pursue education and improve their prospects.

He said the prime minister had initiated the journey towards a Digital Pakistan and was committed to ensuring that a lack of resources did not deprive children of opportunities.

Mashhood added that the prime minister had pledged not to allow resources for the country’s children to be curtailed, saying Pakistan was attracting international engagement and interest in agreements.
