Under the Punjab Vagrancy Amendment Ordinance, 2026, which immediately came into effect after signatures by the provincial governor, parents and guardians making their children beggars may face imprisonment of up to three years and also Rs300,000 fine.

The ordinance has changed the definition of a child to also include those aged 16 years of age.

In order to eliminate begging in the province, change has also been introduced in the administrative structure as DG Social Welfare and Baitul Mal has been appointed as Controller of Vagrancy.
