The government of Punjab has refused to lend Rs12.52 billion from the provincial kitty for holding local bodies (LBs) elections in the province.

In a response to the federal government, the provincial government has opined that the amount on elections should be taken from the Federal Collective Fund.

It has argued that it is the Center which has to finance the holding of local bodies’ polls.

The finance ministry had demanded money from the provincial government at the request of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for holding the elections.

The provincial government had initially showed its willingness to release funds, but later refused.

Meanwhile, departments of local bodies, law and finance have also supported the idea of receiving funds from the federal government for the purpose.
