PESHAWAR: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) long march entered its fifth day on Thursday, with the caravan set to leave Khyber for Peshawar as the party revised its schedule and proposed route through several districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).
The caravan spent the night in Khyber after a large number of supporters gathered there for an address by KP Chief Minister Sohail Afridi.
According to information shared about the march, more than 30,000 people attended the gathering in Khyber, Afridi’s hometown. The chief minister later went to his ancestral home, while party workers and supporters stayed at camps set up for the march.
The caravan is scheduled to reach Kabotar Chowk on Charsadda Road in Peshawar at around 9pm, where Afridi is expected to address the participants. The workers will then stay overnight on Charsadda Road before departing for Charsadda the following day.
From there, the march is expected to move through several districts before reaching Malakand.
Schools shut
Private and government schools were partially closed in the city with classes suspended in areas along the route of the PTI’s long march convoy, Education Department sources said.
The sources said schools were shut in view of the march and the security situation. All schools outside the convoy’s route remained open as usual.
PTI revises march schedule
According to PTI sources, the party has revised the schedule, with the march now expected to reach Swabi on October 10 instead of October 8.
Caravans from Malakand have been directed to set out on October 11, the sources said.
The proposed route could take the march from Khyber to Peshawar and then towards Charsadda. From there, it is expected to pass through Mohmand, Mardan and Bajaur before reaching Malakand.
The latest changes come as PTI continues its mobilisation across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with the procession scheduled to pass through multiple districts before reaching Malakand.
Afridi criticises governor over security meeting
The march is also taking place amid a political dispute between the provincial government and KP Governor Faisal Karim Kundi over a security meeting he convened with the chief secretary and inspector general of police.
Addressing a cabinet session, Afridi criticised the meeting and described it as unconstitutional.
He said the provincial government, assembly and cabinet remained fully functional, arguing that an elected government with a two-thirds majority was in place in the province.
Afridi said the constitutional status of the governor’s meeting would be examined and that the advocate general would be consulted on the matter.
He also maintained that there was a constitutional procedure for removing a chief minister through a vote of no-confidence.
“The governor chairing a meeting of this nature is an attack on the Constitution and democracy,” Afridi said.
The chief minister further alleged that the governor’s actions were intended to provoke the provincial government and force it to respond.
“We will not allow anyone to launch an attack on democracy,” he said.
Afridi also criticised the Pakistan Peoples Party, accusing it of prioritising personal interests over national interests and saying the party had played what he described as a ‘wrong role’ in the past.
