A new procedure has been established for extending the tenure of contract employees in Punjab.
As per official document, contract extensions for any employee will now be granted based on performance.
The requirement for the Punjab Chief Minister’s prior approval in every individual case for contract extensions has been waived.
Relevant appointing authorities will be empowered to grant contract extensions within their own jurisdiction.
Approval from the Chief Minister will remain mandatory for positions where he is the designated appointing authority.
Recommendations for extensions will be made only for contract employees demonstrating ‘good’ or ‘very good’ performance.
It is mandatory to make a decision regarding the extension before the employee’s current contract expires.
If an extension is not granted, the contract employee will not be permitted to continue working after the completion of their term.
Salary payments to the employee will cease once the contract expires.
Directives have been issued to the Accountant General Punjab and district accounts offices to strictly monitor contract tenures.
Retrospective extensions are not permitted under the Contract Appointment Policy 2004.
