ISLAMABAD/PESHAWAR/DI KHAN: A blast and an exchange of fire were reported near the Aman Mela checkpost in the Draban area of Dera Ismail Khan at around 3:30-4pm on Saturday, with police saying security personnel and militants exchanged fire in the area following the explosion. The checkpost, locally known as the Aman Check Post or Aman Mela, is staffed by wildlife, excise and security personnel.
A Rescue 1122 Draban Station team reached the scene immediately and began relief operations. According to Rescue 1122, the bodies of 11 people have been recovered from the site, while 18 injured have so far been provided medical assistance and shifted to hospital. Reuters, however, put the number of injured at 30.
Six Rescue 1122 ambulances, one fire vehicle and more than 25 personnel are taking part in relief operations at the scene, which remain ongoing as the situation continues to be monitored.
Heavy contingents of police were also dispatched to the scene, along with bomb disposal squad teams, police said. Security personnel cordoned off the area, and a search and clearance operation was launched shortly after the incident, according to police.
Police said the firing had caused fear among residents in the vicinity and advised citizens to remain cautious. Security has since been further tightened in various parts of the city following the incident, police said.
Kohat blast claims 23 lives
On September 19, eight militants were killed as police and security forces completed a 22-hour clearance operation at the old Kohat Police Lines on Saturday, the Central Police Office said, though security sources put the figure at seven. The operation followed a suicide attack on the Police Lines mosque on Friday that killed 23 people and injured 130, according to officials, after which militants infiltrated the compound, triggering a prolonged assault involving Elite Force commandos, Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) teams and other security forces.
