LAHORE: Lahore police have registered a case against five people, including a woman, over an alleged plan to recruit and train youths for violence during a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protest that was originally scheduled for September 27 but has now been postponed until October 4.
According to the FIR registered at Defence A police station, the suspects allegedly planned to form a “guerrilla-type group” to confront law enforcement personnel, create unrest and incite people against the state.
The FIR names two suspects, including a woman, while three others have been listed as unidentified. The case includes charges under sections 186, 353, 120-B, 124 and 505 of the Pakistan Penal Code.
PTI had called for a march towards Islamabad on September 27 over its demands, but the schedule has since been subject to conflicting statements, with the party announcing that the march would be postponed until October 4.
According to the FIR, eight police personnel, including a female constable, were patrolling a local market when an informant allegedly told them that a man named Amin was looking for “goons” to make the September 27 PTI protest violent.
The FIR alleged that the recruits were to be trained to fight police and other law enforcement personnel in order to create a tense situation and provoke people against the state.
Police further alleged that the group was being trained to damage Pakistan’s reputation internationally and defame the state, national security and law enforcement agencies.
According to the FIR, the informant later told police that the suspect was walking towards Chirar Pind from a cemetery with some associates and could be arrested if an immediate raid was conducted.
Police said a raiding party was formed and four people were surrounded after being identified by the informant. They allegedly resisted the police, while one person was apprehended and three others escaped towards the cemetery.
The FIR said a recording of a phone call was recovered from the arrested suspect’s mobile phone. Police allege that a woman could be heard instructing him to recruit 20 to 30 youths for the September 27 PTI protest and have them trained for use against police.
According to police, the arrested suspect identified the woman as his employer’s sister and alleged that she had ordered the formation and training of a “guerrilla-type group” comprising PTI sympathisers to fight police.
The suspect also allegedly told police that the three people who escaped had been gathered for the same purpose.
The allegations are contained in the police FIR and have not been independently verified.
