Federal ministers have said petrol will be available to eligible consumers at a price even lower than the previous subsidy rates during the US-Iran war under the Prime Minister’s Fuel Relief Package.
The government is providing relief worth Rs130 billion to the public, ministers said, as it seeks to protect lower-income groups from the impact of rising fuel costs, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
Addressing a joint news conference in Islamabad on Monday, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik said the situation in the region was clear to everyone and that the government was making efforts to control its impact. He described the relief package as the first step towards protecting vulnerable sections of society.
Malik said that after the relief was applied, eligible consumers would be able to buy petrol at a price lower than the previous subsidy rates during the US-Iran war. He added that the government was providing Rs130 billion in relief to the public.
Information Technology Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja explained how people could register for the Prime Minister’s Fuel Relief Package. Applicants must send their name, national identity card number, vehicle number plate and province name to 9771.
After completing registration, applicants can send a message to 9771 to obtain a token, she said.
Under the scheme, motorcycle owners will be eligible for 20 litres of petrol per month at the discounted price, while owners of small cars will be eligible for 30 litres.
To receive the relief, the motorcycle, rickshaw or car must be registered in the applicant’s name.
Information Minister Atta Tarar said the prime minister had introduced the fuel relief scheme after recognising the difficulties faced by the public.
He said motorcycles, rickshaws and vehicles with engines of up to 800cc would receive a discount of Rs100 per litre. Tarar said a system of this kind had never previously been introduced.
The government says the package is intended to provide direct support to eligible consumers while efforts continue to manage the impact of the regional situation on fuel prices.
Shaza Fatima said that a simplified registration procedure, with minimum checks and balances, has been introduced to ensure that the maximum number of eligible people can benefit from the Prime Minister’s fuel relief scheme.
She said the scheme is targeted at users of two- and three-wheelers, as well as vehicles with engine capacities of up to 800cc. Under the scheme, eligible beneficiaries will receive a fuel subsidy of one hundred rupees per litre.
Sharing details of the registration process, she said eligible applicants can register from home by sending their CNIC number, plate number, the first letter of their province, and the vehicle’s registration date to 9771. She said this will complete the registration process.
She said before visiting a petrol station, registered beneficiaries will need to send TOK to 9771 to receive a fuel relief token. The fuel station will then provide the subsidized fuel upon seeing the token number.
The Information Minister said that this fuel relief scheme is meant for the deserving people in order to reduce their burden in the current situation. He said all options will be used to ensure greater awareness about the scheme. He mentioned that austerity measures are also being taken.
In his remarks, the Minister for Petroleum said that the government will provide 25 billion rupees per month for the fuel relief scheme.
He said regardless of scarcity of resources, the government has tried to protect the weak segments of the society.
