Health experts in Karachi have advised citizens to take extra precautions as the intense heatwave raises the risk of infections and related illnesses across the city.

According to medical specialists, the extreme weather conditions can contribute to an increase in waterborne and foodborne infections. They have urged residents to avoid consuming unhygienic street food and beverages, which can become unsafe more quickly in high temperatures.

Doctors further recommended that citizens drink boiled or properly filtered water to reduce the risk of stomach and intestinal infections, which tend to rise during hot weather. Contaminated water and improperly stored food items are considered major causes of illness in such conditions.

Experts also advised people to limit unnecessary outdoor activities, especially during peak heat hours of the day. Prolonged exposure to sunlight can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke.

To minimize health risks, citizens are encouraged to wear light-colored and loose-fitting clothing, which helps the body stay cool. They also stressed the importance of covering the head when stepping outside to protect against direct sun exposure.

Health officials have warned that vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing medical conditions, are particularly at risk during heatwaves and should take extra care.

Authorities continue to urge the public to follow preventive guidelines as the city experiences sustained high temperatures, which are expected to persist in the coming days.
