WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new feature that may appear small on the surface but could significantly improve user experience. According to a report by WABetaInfo, the Meta-owned messaging app is currently testing “notification bubbles” in its latest Android beta version.
The feature is based on functionality already supported by Android since version 10, allowing apps to display floating chat heads or bubbles on the screen. Similar systems are already seen in apps like Facebook Messenger, where conversations can appear as movable icons on top of other applications.
With this new update, whenever a user receives a message from an individual contact or group, a small floating bubble will appear on the screen. This bubble will remain visible even when the user is on the home screen or using another application.
Each bubble is expected to display the profile picture of the contact or group, along with a small WhatsApp icon indicating a new message notification. This makes it easier for users to instantly recognize who has messaged them without opening the full app.
By tapping on the floating bubble, users will be able to open a compact chat interface directly. This will allow them to read messages and reply instantly without needing to fully launch WhatsApp. The goal is to make communication faster and more seamless, especially for users who frequently switch between apps.
One of the key advantages of this feature is improved multitasking. Users will be able to respond to messages while watching videos, browsing social media, or working in other apps. Multiple chat bubbles can also be active at the same time, allowing conversations with different contacts or groups simultaneously.
This feature is particularly useful for users who manage multiple conversations throughout the day, as it reduces the need to constantly open and close the app. It also enhances convenience for quick replies in busy or time-sensitive situations.
However, it is important to note that the feature is currently in the testing phase and is only available to selected users in the WhatsApp beta program for Android devices. As of now, WhatsApp has not announced an official release date for the public rollout.
Like many beta features, it will undergo further testing and improvements based on user feedback before being made widely available. Some features tested in beta versions are sometimes modified or delayed depending on performance and user response.
WhatsApp has been continuously introducing new updates aimed at improving usability, privacy, and functionality. In recent months, the platform has also experimented with enhanced security features, subscription models, and fraud prevention tools.
