LONDON: A major technical fault affecting the flight processing and radar systems of the UK’s National Air Traffic Services (NATS) has been resolved, and the systems have been restored.
According to authorities, the disruption severely affected flight operations at 15 major airports, including London Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Luton and Glasgow.
More than 4,000 flights across the UK were estimated to have been affected, including around 1,305 cancellations and 2,700 delays.
At London Heathrow, 527 flights were cancelled and 430 delayed. Gatwick recorded 260 cancellations and 312 delays, while London Stansted saw 122 cancellations and 300 delays.
Flight delays at several airports reached 150 to 200 minutes, while dozens of flights were diverted because of the system failure.
Technical teams and engineers worked through the night to identify the cause of the fault and restore the systems as quickly as possible.
Although the systems have now been restored, passengers may continue to experience disruption as airlines work to clear the backlog created by the outage.
