Sukkur (Abdul Jabbar Noonari): A couple who reportedly married of their own free will has reached the Sukkur National Press Club, alleging threats and harassment from influential individuals.
Asia Abro and Shahzaib Patafi held a press conference and appealed to the authorities for protection, alleging that they are facing serious threats following their marriage.
Asia Abro stated that she married Shahzaib Patafi of her own free will at a court in Gambat approximately one week ago. She alleged that her father, Munir Ahmed Abro, mother Fahmida, maternal uncles Ashiq Hussain Chandio and Ilyas Chandio, uncle Qalandar Bakhsh Jagirani, Naeem Khokhar and others have been threatening to kill her because she chose to marry the man she loves.
“I fear for my life, as well as the life of my husband. We need immediate protection from these people,” Asia said.
Shahzaib Patafi said that Asia is his maternal cousin and that they had been in love with each other for some time. According to him, when their families became aware of their relationship, they refused to accept the proposed marriage.
He alleged that Asia’s parents were attempting to arrange her marriage elsewhere. He claimed that, as a result, he and Asia decided to marry at the Gambat court according to their own choice.
Shahzaib further alleged that influential individuals were using the police against the couple. He claimed that relatives of Asia, accompanied by police personnel, attacked his house. He expressed concern that the couple could face further threats or violence.
The couple appealed to DIG Sukkur and SSP Sukkur to take immediate notice of the matter, investigate the allegations, and provide them with adequate security.
They said they had approached the press club because they feared for their safety and wanted the authorities to ensure that their legal and constitutional rights were protected.
The couple also urged the police and administration to investigate the alleged threats and the reported attack on Shahzaib’s residence impartially, without pressure from any influential individuals.
