ISLAMABAD: The issue of providing prisoners with medical facilities similar to those available to former Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan has reached the Federal Constitutional Court.
Three inmates of Adiala Jail have challenged a decision of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) concerning the medical facilities being provided to Imran Khan.
The prisoners have approached the Federal Constitutional Court against the Islamabad High Court’s ruling, seeking a review of the decision and equal treatment for inmates in matters related to healthcare facilities.
According to the petition, the applicants have requested the Federal Constitutional Court to declare the Islamabad High Court’s decision null and void.
The petition raises the broader issue of whether prisoners should be entitled to comparable medical facilities and treatment while in custody. The applicants argue that the availability of enhanced medical arrangements for one prisoner raises questions about equal access to healthcare for other inmates.
The development comes amid continued attention to the health and medical arrangements available to Imran Khan during his imprisonment at Adiala Jail. His medical care and access to healthcare facilities have previously been the subject of legal proceedings and public debate.
The three prisoners have now sought intervention from the Federal Constitutional Court, challenging the IHC decision that relates to the medical facilities provided to Imran Khan.
In their petition, the applicants have asked the constitutional court to set aside the Islamabad High Court’s judgment. They are seeking relief on the grounds that the existing arrangement should not result in unequal treatment among prisoners.
The case could have implications beyond the applicants themselves, as the question of medical treatment for prisoners involves broader issues concerning prisoners’ rights, equal treatment and the responsibilities of jail authorities.
