Pyongyang: North Korea has added a new destroyer to its navy. The warship may be capable of carrying nuclear weapons, according to statements from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
Kim Jong Un said the newly added destroyer would become part of a system designed to respond to nuclear attacks.
North Korea’s state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on the commissioning of the new warship. However, the report did not clearly confirm whether the destroyer is actually equipped with nuclear weapons.
The development comes as North Korea continues efforts to expand its military and nuclear capabilities.
According to foreign media reports, Kim Jong Un wants to increase the country’s nuclear-capable forces. North Korea has also been speeding up efforts to modernize its navy.
A commissioning ceremony for the new warship was held in the coastal city of Wonsan.
Speaking at the ceremony, Kim Jong Un said the deployment of the new destroyer in the East Sea of the Korean Peninsula sends a clear message to North Korea’s enemies.
He said that the time had come for North Korea to make full use of its sovereignty both on the surface of the sea and underwater.
The comments indicate that North Korea wants to strengthen its ability to operate at sea and develop more advanced naval weapons.
The new warship is named Kang Kon. According to KCNA, it is the second warship of its class to be added to the North Korean navy.
The addition of the destroyer is part of North Korea’s wider efforts to strengthen its naval forces.
North Korea has traditionally focused heavily on land-based missiles and nuclear weapons. In recent years, however, the country has placed greater attention on developing naval capabilities.
Kim Jong Un has repeatedly called for the modernization of North Korea’s navy.
The country has been developing different types of naval weapons and platforms as part of its military strategy.
North Korea says that stronger naval forces are necessary to protect its sovereignty and national security.
Kim Jong Un also repeated his claim that North Korea’s naval nuclear weapons are being continuously improved.
He said the country would continue expanding its most powerful strategic assets in its maritime areas.
According to the North Korean leader, the purpose of this expansion is to protect the country’s maritime sovereignty and regional security.
The development has attracted international attention because of North Korea’s nuclear weapons programme.
The possibility of a nuclear-capable warship could increase concerns among neighboring countries, particularly South Korea and Japan.
However, North Korea has not clearly confirmed that the new destroyer carries nuclear weapons.
KCNA’s report described the ship as part of a system capable of responding to nuclear attacks, but it did not provide clear technical details about its weapons.
The exact capabilities of the Kang Kon destroyer therefore remain uncertain.
The new ship is nevertheless being presented by North Korea as an important addition to its military forces.
Kim Jong Un’s comments also suggest that the country plans to increase the role of naval forces in its overall military strategy.
The East Sea, also known internationally as the Sea of Japan, is an important area for regional security.
North Korea, South Korea and Japan closely monitor military developments in the region.
The deployment of a new advanced warship could therefore become another point of concern in an already tense security environment.
North Korea has continued to develop its missile and nuclear programmes despite international pressure and sanctions.
Its leadership says these military capabilities are necessary to protect the country from external threats.
Other countries, however, remain concerned about North Korea’s growing military capabilities and the possible use of nuclear weapons.
The new destroyer is another sign that Pyongyang is seeking to expand its military options beyond traditional land-based weapons.
The commissioning ceremony in Wonsan demonstrated the importance North Korea is placing on its naval modernization programme.
Kim Jong Un said that the country would continue strengthening its maritime strategic assets.
For now, it remains unclear whether the Kang Kon is actually armed with nuclear weapons. North Korea’s official statements have not provided enough information to independently confirm this.
The main development is that North Korea has officially added the new destroyer to its navy and says it will play a role in the country’s strategic defence system.
The move is likely to receive close attention from regional governments and military experts as North Korea continues to expand and modernize its armed forces.
