SUKKUR A rally and a dignified flag-hoisting ceremony were held in Sukkur on Defence Day to pay tribute to the martyrs and veterans of Pakistan.
The events were organized by Sukkur Municipal Corporation and the District Administration Sukkur. A special rally was held from Jinnah Municipal Stadium to Sukkur Press Club, followed by a flag-hoisting and cake-cutting ceremony at the Sukkur Walking Track.
Mayor Sukkur and Sindh government spokesperson Barrister Arsalan Islam Sheikh, Additional Deputy Commissioner Sukkur Tanveer Ahmed, elected representatives, government officials, civil society members, youth, traders, media representatives and a large number of citizens attended the ceremony.
Addressing the gathering, Barrister Arsalan Islam Sheikh said September 6 is a proud chapter in Pakistan’s history and a day to remember the sacrifices of the country’s martyrs and veterans. He said their courage, determination and patriotism remain an enduring source of national pride.
He paid tribute to Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, praising his leadership and courage in defending Pakistan during recent difficult circumstances. He said the armed forces had demonstrated their professional capabilities and made it clear that Pakistan was fully capable of defending its sovereignty.
Sheikh also praised PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari for his diplomatic efforts, saying Pakistan’s position had been effectively presented at the international level through diplomacy and global engagement.
He said the Defence Day rally was aimed not only at honouring the martyrs but also at promoting patriotism, national unity, discipline and a sense of responsibility among the younger generation.
Additional Deputy Commissioner-I Sukkur Tanveer Ahmed said the Pakistan Armed Forces had demonstrated courage both during the 1965 war and recent challenges. He recalled that the nation had stood firmly alongside the armed forces in 1965.
Deputy Mayor Dr Arshad Mughal said Pakistani soldiers had sacrificed their lives during the 1965 war and defeated the enemy’s surprise attack.
Assistant Commissioners Dr Khansa Malik and Bushra Mansoor also praised the courage and determination demonstrated by the armed forces during the 1965 war.
The ceremony concluded with prayers for Pakistan’s security, stability and prosperity. The national flag was hoisted and a cake was cut to mark Defence Day.
Participants paid tribute to the martyrs and veterans and expressed their commitment to Pakistan’s sovereignty, unity and progress.
