Eight members of the Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) on Saturday rejected a proposed amendment to Rule 97-A of the Council rules under which there is a suggestion to keep proceedings of the Bar confidential as well as classified.
Eight members also objected to the approval of the proposed amendment through a circular.
The members were of the view that they had not been informed of the reasons for a change in the rule in a rush.
The members opined that changes such as the one proposed, which had far-reaching consequences, should be approved at a meeting rather than through a circular.
They further said that the PBC was a legal and constitutional body of elected legal experts, and not a private club.
The members demanded that proceedings of the Council should be transparent, and an exemption could only be granted in disciplinary matters.
Furthermore, they said that the proposed amendment was a violation of Article 19 of the constitution, which guaranteed freedom of expression to citizens.
