SUKKUR (Press Release), August 31, 2026: A delegation of students from Shah Abdul Latif University, Khairpur visited the Sukkur Municipal Corporation on Monday as part of educational initiatives organized by Shehri – Citizens for a Better Environment under the programmes “Youth Empowerment for Engaged Citizenship” and “Youth for Democracy: Civic Education and National Governance Engagement.”
The purpose of the study and educational visit was to provide young people with practical exposure to the local government system, public representation, municipal administration and their responsibilities as citizens.
The student delegation was warmly welcomed at the Sukkur Municipal Corporation by Senior Advisor to the Mayor Sukkur Abid Ali Ansari and Ms. Azra Jamal.
The delegation later met Deputy Mayor Sukkur Dr. Arshad Mughal at the Mayor’s Office, where a detailed discussion was held on the local government system, civic affairs, the scope of municipal institutions and the delivery of public services.
During the meeting, the students were briefed about the jurisdiction, functions and responsibilities of the Sukkur Municipal Corporation, the provision of civic facilities, the role of municipal administration, and the respective responsibilities of elected representatives and administrative officers. They were also informed about the role of the Municipal Corporation in addressing public issues and resolving problems faced by citizens.
The students actively participated in the session and asked questions about various aspects of municipal administration and civic services. The officials provided detailed responses and explained the practical functioning of the local government institution.
Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Mayor Sukkur Dr. Arshad Mughal said that young people were a valuable asset of any society and that educating them about civic institutions, the democratic process and their responsibilities was essential for building a better and more responsible society.
He said that under the special patronage and directives of Mayor Sukkur Barrister Arsalan Islam Sheikh, all necessary arrangements had been made by the Sukkur Municipal Corporation for the students’ study visit. The initiative was aimed at providing young people with an opportunity to observe and understand the practical functioning of a municipal institution and the mechanisms through which public services are delivered.
The Deputy Mayor further said that it was the Mayor’s priority to ensure that the younger generation gained awareness of civic institutions, the democratic system and different aspects of public service. He emphasized that informed and responsible young people could play an effective role in the development of society and the country.
Dr. Arshad Mughal added that educational visits of this nature provide students with valuable practical experience alongside their academic and theoretical knowledge. Such interaction, he said, helps bridge the gap between classroom learning and the actual functioning of public institutions.
Later, the student delegation also visited the office of Municipal Commissioner Sukkur Khalid Hussain Jatoi. During the meeting, the students held a detailed discussion with the Municipal Commissioner regarding the administrative affairs of the Sukkur Municipal Corporation, civic services, the practical role of the municipal institution and various urban issues confronting the city.
The session also included an interactive question-and-answer discussion, allowing the students to gain a better understanding of municipal administration, public service delivery and the challenges faced by local government institutions in managing civic affairs.
The central objective of the study visit was to promote informed citizenship, democratic awareness, civic responsibility, institutional understanding and constructive participation in public affairs among young people.
The students expressed their gratitude to the Sukkur Municipal Corporation for organizing the visit and providing them with an opportunity to interact with elected representatives and senior administrative officials. They described the visit as a highly valuable experience that would contribute significantly to both their academic understanding and practical knowledge of local governance.
The visit concluded with an emphasis on the importance of engaging young people with public institutions and encouraging them to play a positive, informed and responsible role in civic and democratic life.
