Tensions flared in Karachi as protesters attempted to enter the United States Consulate following reported U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran. The demonstrations turned violent, with clashes between law enforcement agencies and protesters resulting in the use of tear gas and road closures in several key areas of the city.
According to police officials, a large number of demonstrators gathered near the U.S. Consulate to protest against the alleged American and Israeli military actions targeting Iran. The protest quickly escalated when some individuals in the crowd began pelting stones at the consulate premises and nearby security personnel. In response, police and Rangers personnel took action to disperse the crowd.
Law enforcement authorities stated that tear gas shells were fired to push the protesters back and prevent them from breaching the security perimeter of the consulate. Security forces managed to repel the demonstrators and restore a degree of control in the area, though tensions remained high for several hours.
During the unrest, a police checkpoint in the vicinity was reportedly set on fire by unidentified individuals. The incident added to the volatility of the situation and prompted a heavier security deployment in the surrounding neighborhoods. Footage circulating on social media showed smoke rising from the damaged police post, though officials have not yet released a detailed damage assessment.
Additional Inspector General (AIG) Karachi, Azad Khan, arrived at the U.S. Consulate to personally oversee the security arrangements and assess the evolving situation. Senior police officers coordinated efforts on the ground to prevent further escalation and ensure the safety of diplomatic premises and personnel.
Traffic in several parts of the city was significantly disrupted due to the protest and subsequent security measures. According to the traffic police, the road from Sultanabad leading toward Mai Kolachi was closed to vehicular movement. Authorities suspended traffic flow in surrounding areas as a precautionary measure, advising commuters to seek alternative routes.
Traffic officials further stated that vehicles coming from Jinnah Bridge were being diverted toward I.I. Chundrigar Road. Similarly, cars arriving from Boat Basin were redirected at the Mai Kolachi Phatak for a U-turn, while traffic from PIDC was being sent back via Park Cut. The diversions led to congestion on alternate routes, causing inconvenience to commuters during peak hours.
The protest in Karachi followed reports circulating in Iranian state media claiming that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, had been killed in the U.S. and Israeli attacks. The reports intensified public anger among certain segments, leading to calls for demonstrations in multiple cities.
Meanwhile, a separate protest also took place outside the Lahore Press Club. Demonstrators gathered to condemn the alleged military actions and express solidarity with Iran. Some protesters reportedly attempted to move toward the U.S. Consulate in Lahore and engaged in acts of vandalism outside the premises. However, police personnel present at the scene prevented them from approaching the consulate building itself.
Authorities in both Karachi and Lahore maintained a heightened security presence around diplomatic missions and other sensitive installations to prevent further incidents. Officials emphasized that while peaceful protest is a constitutional right, any attempt to damage public or private property or threaten diplomatic facilities would be dealt with strictly under the law.
No immediate reports of serious injuries were confirmed at the time of reporting, though officials indicated that investigations were underway to identify individuals involved in arson and vandalism. Security agencies are reviewing available video footage to trace those responsible for instigating violence during the demonstrations.
The situation in Karachi gradually came under control after several hours, but law enforcement remained on alert amid concerns about potential follow-up protests. Authorities urged citizens to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information that could further inflame tensions.
The events underscore the heightened sensitivity in the region following the reported strikes and demonstrate how international developments can quickly trigger local unrest. Government officials have not yet issued a comprehensive statement regarding the broader geopolitical developments, but security forces continue to monitor the situation closely.
