Federal Information Minister Atta Tarar has accused Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan’s family and his sister of violating court orders in connection with the former prime minister’s medical treatment.
Speaking to the media, Tarar said the administration had complied with the court’s directions concerning Imran Khan’s medical examination and treatment. He claimed that the court had clearly directed that no political statements or media activity should take place in connection with the matter, but those instructions were allegedly not followed.
According to the information minister, political activity and media talks took place despite the court’s directions. He also alleged that the gathering of PTI supporters outside Shifa International Hospital created a security problem and interfered with security arrangements.
Tarar said the authorities had fulfilled all requirements laid down by the court. He accused PTI of filing what he described as a baseless contempt-of-court petition, arguing that the actual violation had occurred outside the hospital when groups of people gathered there.
He said the court had specifically directed that political statements should not be made, yet political activity and public statements continued. Tarar therefore maintained that Imran Khan, his family and PTI had themselves become liable for contempt of court by allegedly disregarding the judicial directions.
The minister also discussed Imran Khan’s medical examination. He said the PTI founder was examined in the presence of his sister and his doctors. According to an initial medical report cited by Tarar, Imran Khan was in good health.
Tarar rejected allegations that the government had prevented or interrupted Imran Khan’s medical treatment. He said the government had not stopped his treatment even for a single day and emphasized that the issue should be treated as a medical and legal matter rather than being turned into a political controversy.
The minister also criticized what he described as political propaganda surrounding the former prime minister’s health. He urged all sides to avoid politicizing the medical issue and said the government had acted in accordance with the court’s directions.
Tarar further accused Imran Khan’s sister and PTI of contradicting their own assurances by allegedly failing to comply with the court order. He argued that the party could not simultaneously rely on the court’s directions and disregard restrictions contained in the same order.
The government has also raised a broader question in its review petition concerning equal treatment of prisoners. According to Tarar, the government respectfully asked whether the same medical facilities and privileges being sought for Imran Khan would be available to every other prisoner in the country.
The question of equal treatment has become an important part of the government’s legal challenge to the court’s directions concerning Imran Khan’s possible treatment at a private hospital. The government has argued that facilities available to one prisoner should be considered within the broader framework of prison laws and the rights of other inmates.
Tarar also addressed statements by the Punjab Bar Council and Pakistan Bar Council. He said both bodies had distanced themselves from what he described as PTI’s political propaganda and had warned against using the names of the bar councils for political purposes.
According to the minister, the bar councils made it clear that statements made individually by any member should not automatically be attributed to the councils themselves. He said the councils had specifically asked political groups not to use their names to advance political objectives.
The minister’s comments come amid an increasingly heated dispute over Imran Khan’s medical treatment, his possible transfer to a private hospital and the legal authority behind the court’s directions. The government has challenged the relevant judicial orders, while PTI and Imran Khan’s family have continued to demand appropriate medical care.
The controversy has now expanded beyond the question of medical treatment to include allegations of contempt of court, security concerns and broader questions about the rights and privileges available to prisoners.
The government maintains that it has complied with the court’s directions and that Imran Khan’s medical needs are being addressed. PTI, meanwhile, has continued to raise concerns about his health and treatment.
The matter is expected to remain before the courts as the government pursues its review petition and seeks clarification over the scope of the judicial orders. The outcome could also establish broader principles concerning medical treatment, private hospital transfers and equal facilities for prisoners in Pakistan.
