LAHORE: The Lahore Traffic Police will begin wearing a newly approved uniform from February 14 after Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz granted formal approval for the change. The initiative aims to modernize the appearance of the traffic police force and enhance its professional image, according to official sources.
Following the chief minister’s approval, traffic wardens deployed across Lahore will officially transition to the new uniform on February 14. In the first phase of the plan, the uniform change will be implemented exclusively in Lahore. Authorities have clarified that the phased rollout is intended to ensure smooth implementation and effective monitoring before expanding the initiative to other districts of Punjab.
According to a notification issued after the approval, the second phase of the project will include the districts of Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Multan, and Rawalpindi. In the third and final phase, the new traffic police uniform will be introduced across the remaining districts of the province. The phased strategy reflects the provincial government’s broader plan to reform traffic management and law enforcement standards throughout Punjab.
Officials familiar with the matter stated that the new uniform has been designed keeping in mind practicality, comfort, and a modern outlook. The updated design is expected to improve visibility, especially during long duty hours and in challenging traffic conditions. Traffic wardens often perform their duties under extreme weather conditions, and the redesigned uniform is intended to provide greater comfort and durability while maintaining a professional appearance.
The Punjab government has emphasized that strengthening traffic policing is a key priority, particularly in major urban centers like Lahore, where traffic congestion and road safety remain major challenges. The uniform change is being viewed as part of a broader reform agenda aimed at improving discipline, morale, and public trust in traffic law enforcement.
In addition to the uniform change, the notification also announced the launch of electric patrolling vehicles for traffic police. These electric vehicles will be linked with the Safe Cities Authority, allowing for better coordination, monitoring, and use of modern surveillance systems. Officials believe that integrating electric patrolling vehicles with the Safe Cities infrastructure will significantly improve response times and enhance real-time monitoring of traffic violations and incidents.
The introduction of electric vehicles is also expected to result in substantial financial savings. According to the notification, the use of electric patrolling vehicles will save millions of rupees in fuel costs. Rising fuel prices have placed a significant burden on government departments, and the shift toward electric mobility reflects the Punjab government’s commitment to cost-effective and environmentally friendly solutions.
Environmental experts have welcomed the move, noting that electric vehicles produce zero tailpipe emissions and can play a role in reducing air pollution in densely populated cities like Lahore. Traffic-related emissions are a major contributor to urban air pollution, and the gradual adoption of electric vehicles by law enforcement agencies could set a positive example for other public sector departments.
Public reaction to the announcement has been mixed but largely positive. Many citizens have appreciated the government’s focus on modernizing the traffic police and adopting eco-friendly measures. Some residents expressed hope that along with new uniforms and vehicles, authorities would also focus on improving traffic discipline, enforcement consistency, and public awareness about road safety rules.
Traffic police officials have stated that training and orientation sessions will be conducted to ensure that wardens adapt smoothly to the new uniform and the use of electric patrolling vehicles. Coordination with the Safe Cities Authority will also be strengthened to make full use of surveillance cameras and digital monitoring tools.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has repeatedly emphasized the importance of efficient governance, transparency, and public service delivery. The approval of the new traffic police uniform and the introduction of electric patrolling vehicles align with her vision of a modern, responsive, and sustainable Punjab.
