BADIN: Questions have been raised over a reported police encounter in the outskirts of Badin after the family of a man killed in the incident accused police of staging a fake encounter.

The family alleged that the man was taken into police custody and later killed because his family refused to pay a bribe.

The deceased suspect’s mother claimed that her son had gone to drop his wife at her parents’ home when police detained him. She alleged that police officials demanded Rs500,000 and killed her son after the family refused to pay the amount.

The deceased man’s widow also accused the police of killing her husband in a fake encounter.

The mother has approached the Sindh High Court seeking registration of a case against those allegedly responsible. The court is scheduled to hear the matter on August 25.

Police, however, have rejected the family’s allegations. According to the police version, officers went to arrest the suspect when he allegedly attacked them. Police said they retaliated, resulting in the suspect’s death. Two police personnel were also reportedly injured during the exchange of fire.

Police further claimed that the deceased was wanted in eight different cases, including drug-related offences and attempted murder.

The conflicting accounts have raised questions about the circumstances surrounding the death. The family is seeking a legal investigation into the incident, while police maintain that the man was killed during an armed confrontation.

The Sindh High Court hearing is expected to provide an opportunity for the family to present its allegations and seek legal action. Further proceedings may determine whether an independent investigation is required into the reported encounter.
