Islamabad: There is a possibility of an increase in electricity tariffs in Pakistan under the monthly Fuel Price Adjustment (FPA) mechanism. The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has submitted its request for the December FPA to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA).
According to the CPPA submission, a total of 848.7 million units of electricity were generated in December, out of which 820.8 million units were supplied to the distribution companies (DISCOs). The average cost per unit of electricity during the month was Rs 9.62.
NEPRA will hold a hearing on the CPPA’s FPA request on January 29, during which it will review the proposal and decide whether to adjust electricity tariffs for consumers based on fuel cost variations.
The monthly FPA mechanism is designed to reflect fluctuations in fuel costs for electricity generation. Increases in international fuel prices or higher generation costs are usually passed on to consumers through this adjustment, while decreases may lead to tariff reductions.
Electricity consumers are advised to monitor NEPRA announcements following the hearing, as any approved adjustment could impact monthly bills across the country.
