MUZAFFARABAD: Chief Election Commissioner of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Justice (R) Ghulam Mustafa Mughal, said the people rejected violence and expressed their will through the power of the ballot during the second phase of the AJK Legislative Assembly elections.
Addressing a press conference in Muzaffarabad, Justice Mughal described the elections as among the most challenging to conduct under the prevailing circumstances. He said the voter turnout was encouraging despite the conditions in which the polls were held.
He stated that voter turnout reached 46.3 percent in Mirpur Division and 53 percent in Muzaffarabad Division, adding that citizens made the right decision by participating in the democratic process instead of resorting to violence.
The second phase of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly elections was held on Sunday, covering eight constituencies in Muzaffarabad Division and 12 seats reserved for refugees.
According to unofficial and provisional results announced so far, the Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) has won 14 seats, while the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has secured five seats. One constituency’s polling was postponed earlier due to adverse weather conditions.
