Ottawa: Canadian authorities have arrested several truck drivers of Indian origin during a major operation targeting a cross-border drug smuggling network, seizing approximately 1.7 tonnes of illegal narcotics with an estimated value of $139 million.
According to a report by Indian broadcaster NDTV, the operation was carried out under “Project Bay,” a Canadian law enforcement initiative aimed at disrupting the cross-border trafficking of illegal drugs.
Investigators said the operation uncovered an illegal commercial transportation network allegedly involved in moving narcotics across the border. The investigation reportedly revealed links between the network and individuals of Indian origin.
Canadian authorities stated that approximately 1.7 tonnes of illicit drugs, valued at $139 million, were recovered during the operation. Officials described the seizure as one of the significant outcomes of their ongoing efforts to combat organised drug trafficking.
According to the report, the arrests were made as part of a broader crackdown on criminal organisations using commercial trucking routes to transport illegal substances across international borders.
Canadian security expert Wade Desjardins reportedly described the alleged network as a major organised crime group suspected of involvement in a range of serious criminal activities in different parts of the world.
Authorities have not released the identities of those arrested, and formal court proceedings are expected to determine the charges against the suspects. Investigators continue to examine the network’s operations, financial links, and possible international connections.
Canadian law enforcement agencies said the investigation remains ongoing and that further arrests or seizures could follow as authorities work to dismantle the wider smuggling network.
The allegations against the arrested individuals have not yet been tested in court, and they are presumed innocent unless proven guilty through legal proceedings. Officials have not disclosed additional details regarding the origin or intended destination of the seized narcotics.
