Sukkur: Chairman of the Sukkur District Council, Syed Kumail Haider Shah, has announced that Sukkur and Rohri will be developed into one of Sindh’s major tourism hubs, adding that the two cities will witness significant improvements in development, infrastructure, and beautification over the next two to three years.
He made these remarks during a visit to inspect ongoing development projects, including the under-construction dual carriageway from Sukkur Barrage to Beri Chowk, which has now entered its final phase of completion.
During the visit, Syed Kumail Haider Shah reviewed the construction work, received a briefing from the relevant officials on the project’s progress, inspected the quality of the work, and directed authorities to complete the project within the stipulated timeframe.
Speaking to the media afterward, he said that the development projects being carried out under the Local Government Department in Sukkur and Rohri are aimed at providing residents with modern transportation, recreational, sports, and essential public facilities.
He said that widening Rohri’s main road into a dual carriageway had become a necessity because thousands of vehicles use the route every day. According to him, the project was delayed due to the presence of trees, encroachments, and other technical obstacles along the road’s median. However, after resolving these issues, the project has now reached its final stage and will soon be opened to the public.
The District Council Chairman emphasized that the council is working equally for the development and prosperity of both urban and rural areas to ensure that residents across the district have access to basic public services.
He also stated that construction of the Syed Nasir Hussain Shah Sports Academy in Rohri is progressing rapidly and is expected to be completed within the next six months. The academy will feature modern training facilities for cricket and various other sports, providing young athletes with opportunities to develop their skills and promote sports in the region.
Syed Kumail Haider Shah further announced that a modern Sukkur Club is being established along the banks of the Indus River as a family recreation center. The club will include family entertainment facilities, walking tracks, open-air recreational spaces, and other modern amenities. He added that more modern clubs will also be established in Sukkur and Rohri to provide residents with quality recreational opportunities.
He said that the city’s mega water filtration plant project is also nearing completion and, God willing, will become operational in September. The project will provide clean and free drinking water to most areas of Rohri, while the city’s water supply network is also being expanded to meet the needs of its growing population.
According to the chairman, approximately PKR 1 billion is being spent on development projects in Sukkur and Rohri. These include road construction, clean drinking water supply, sports facilities, recreational centers, and various other public welfare initiatives.
He reiterated that his vision is to transform Sukkur and Rohri into a major tourism destination in Sindh, where both local residents and visitors from across Pakistan can enjoy modern civic and recreational facilities. He said that upon completion, these projects will strengthen the infrastructure of both cities and promote economic activity as well as tourism.
Responding to a question about constructive criticism, Syed Kumail Haider Shah said that criticism aimed at improving public institutions is always welcome because it helps enhance performance. However, he added that baseless criticism only hampers the pace of development.
When asked about the recent elections in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), he said he was not satisfied with the election results and alleged that there had been an unnecessary delay in announcing them. He said the federal government should not have interfered in the electoral process and maintained that if the elections had been conducted in a free and transparent manner, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) would not only have accepted the results but would also have secured better electoral success. He added that the PPP continues to follow the vision of its Chairman, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, and remains committed to serving the people.
Earlier during the visit, the District Council Chairman instructed the relevant authorities to ensure that all development projects are completed on schedule and according to the highest quality standards so that the people of Rohri can benefit as soon as possible from improved transportation, recreation, sports, and essential public services.
Among those present during the inspection were Irfan Ali Daudpoto, Focal Person to Sindh Local Government Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah; Assistant Commissioner Rohri Murtaza Ghanghro; Syed Naseem Shah, contractor for the dual carriageway project; Chief Municipal Officer (CMO) Rohri Imtiaz Soomro; Ghulam Qadir Ruk; along with engineers, government officials, and other dignitaries.
Residents also welcomed the dual carriageway project, describing it as a major milestone in Rohri’s development. They expressed hope that once completed, it would improve traffic flow, boost commercial activity, and provide citizens with a modern and efficient transportation network.
