Karachi: A charitable Khana Ghar (Food Centre) that has been providing free bread to poor and underprivileged people for the past 25 years is facing severe financial difficulties and has appealed to philanthropists and the public for urgent assistance.
According to Baji Parveen, who manages the welfare initiative, rising inflation—particularly the continuous increase in gas prices—has significantly raised the centre’s operating costs, making it increasingly difficult to continue its services.
She said the facility is equipped with modern bread-making machines, including one capable of producing around 1,500 loaves of bread per hour, which are distributed free of charge to people in need every day.
Baji Parveen explained that the centre’s monthly gas bills have now reached hundreds of thousands of rupees, placing an enormous financial burden on the organisation.
“If timely financial support is not received, there is a real risk that thousands of deserving people will lose access to this essential service,” she said.
She appealed to philanthropists, industrialists, business leaders, charitable organisations, and members of the public to come forward and support the initiative so that the distribution of free bread to the poor and hungry can continue without interruption.
Local residents also voiced support for the appeal, describing charitable organisations such as Khana Ghar as a valuable asset to society.
They said helping welfare initiatives that provide food to vulnerable communities is a shared social responsibility and encouraged those with the means to contribute towards sustaining the long-running humanitarian service.
