ROHRI: Following the recent devastating monsoon rains across Pakistan and the Meteorological Department’s forecast of heavy rainfall in Rohri and other parts of Sindh, authorities have placed the city on high alert and activated emergency response measures.
Acting on the directives of Sindh Local Government Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah and District Council Sukkur Chairman Syed Kamil Haider Shah, the Municipal Committee Rohri, Solid Waste Management, Sewerage Department, and other relevant agencies have been mobilized on an emergency basis.
Speaking to journalists at the Rohri Press Club, Irfan Ali Daudpoto, Focal Person to the Sindh Local Government Minister, said that protecting the lives and property of citizens during the monsoon season is the provincial government’s top priority.
He stated that all concerned departments, district administration, town committees, and union councils have been instructed to remain on 24-hour high alert and be fully prepared to respond to any emergency.
According to Daudpoto, the leave of municipal officers, engineers, sanitary inspectors, supervisors, and sanitation workers has been canceled, while field staff have been directed to remain deployed throughout the city. Large-scale cleaning of drains, sewers, stormwater channels, and sewerage lines is underway to ensure the smooth flow of rainwater.
Special cleaning operations are being carried out in vegetable, meat, and fish markets, Shahi Bazaar, the railway station, bus stand, commercial centers, educational institutions, mosques, imambargahs, parks, sports grounds, major roads, internal streets, and low-lying areas. Garbage, mud, weeds, plastic waste, and construction debris are being removed from roadsides and drainage channels to prevent blockages.
He added that sensitive locations have been identified, additional staff deployed, and emergency response teams formed to deal with waterlogging complaints. Heavy machinery, including excavators, loaders, tractor-trolleys, suction machines, and water pumps, has been kept on standby, while all sewerage pumping stations, disposal works, generators, and electrical systems have been inspected to ensure uninterrupted drainage operations during rainfall.
Daudpoto assured that emergency teams would respond immediately to reports of waterlogging, blocked drains, or any other emergency situation. He also urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rains, keep children away from open manholes, drainage channels, and electrical installations, and promptly report any issues to municipal authorities.
He reiterated that, under the directives of the Sindh Local Government Minister and the Chairman of the District Council Sukkur, all available resources would be utilized to maintain an effective drainage system, minimize disruption to business activities, and safeguard the lives and property of residents during the monsoon season.
