KARACHI: Three suspects arrested in the Dr Akash murder case were killed during a police operation after allegedly coming under fire from their own accomplices, according to the Special Investigation Unit (SIU).
The SIU said the operation was carried out in Umar Brohi Goth, Gulshan-e-Maymar, where police raided a hideout based on information provided by the arrested suspects in an effort to apprehend other members of the alleged gang who remained at large.
According to the SIU, as police approached the location, the fugitives opened fire on the raiding team, triggering an exchange of gunfire.
During the shootout, a police officer was injured, the SIU said.
Police claimed that the three arrested suspects involved in the Dr Akash murder case were fatally shot by gunfire from their own accomplices during the exchange.
The identities of the deceased suspects were not disclosed in the official statement. Authorities said efforts are continuing to arrest the remaining members of the gang who managed to escape.
Background
On July 13, Dr Akash, a young doctor, was shot dead outside a bank in Karachi’s Clifton area during a robbery.
According to police, the suspects intercepted the victim after he withdrew Rs5 million from the bank and fled after snatching Rs2.5 million in cash.
During the investigation, police submitted a report to the Judicial Magistrate (South) stating that an unidentified woman was also allegedly involved in the planning or execution of the robbery.
Investigators had also revealed that the arrested suspects were allegedly involved in several other crimes, including snatching cash from bank customers and robbing businessmen outside banks.
The investigation into the case remains ongoing, with law enforcement agencies continuing efforts to trace and arrest the remaining suspects.
