LAHORE: Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan Secretary General Amir-ul-Azeem has passed away after a prolonged illness, the party confirmed on Wednesday.
A spokesperson for Jamaat-e-Islami said Amir-ul-Azeem had been suffering from cancer for a long time and had remained under treatment.
According to the party, his funeral prayers will be offered at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday at Mansoora, Lahore.
Born in Lahore in 1958, Amir-ul-Azeem earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from the University of the Punjab.
During his student years, he was elected President of the Punjab University Students’ Union and also served as Nazim-e-Ala (Chief Organizer) of Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami.
He played an active role in student politics and participated in a long march demanding the restoration of student unions during the rule of former military ruler General Zia-ul-Haq. He was imprisoned for his involvement in the movement.
Amir-ul-Azeem later held several key positions within Jamaat-e-Islami, including serving for many years as the party’s Central Secretary for Information.
In 2019, then Jamaat-e-Islami chief Siraj-ul-Haq appointed him as the party’s Secretary General following consultation with the Central Shura. He was reappointed to the same position in 2024 by the current Ameer, Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman, also with the approval of the party’s Central Shura.
Amir-ul-Azeem was regarded as a senior leader within Jamaat-e-Islami and remained actively involved in the party’s organizational affairs for decades. His passing has prompted condolences from party leaders and supporters, who have paid tribute to his long-standing political and organizational contributions.
