HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad district administration has reviewed emergency preparedness and contingency measures ahead of the expected monsoon rains on July 26 and 27, directing all relevant departments to complete their arrangements to effectively respond to any emergency situation.
The review meeting of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) was held at the New DC Complex on the instructions of Deputy Commissioner Hyderabad Zain-ul-Abideen Memon. The meeting was chaired by Additional Deputy Commissioner-I Gada Hussain Soomro and Additional Deputy Commissioner-II Mahwish Buriro.
Officials from the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA), Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (HESCO), Health Department, Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA), Irrigation Department, Sindh Irrigation and Drainage Authority (SIDA), Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (HMC), Town Municipal Corporations (TMCs), and other relevant departments attended the meeting.
The participants reviewed departmental preparedness, inter-agency coordination, drainage arrangements, public safety measures, and contingency plans to deal with potential flooding and other monsoon-related emergencies.
Addressing the meeting, ADC-I Gada Hussain Soomro stressed that all concerned departments must complete their preparations well before the anticipated rainfall and work under a coordinated strategy to handle any emergency efficiently.
Officials informed the meeting that the cleaning of major storm-water drains, including the Wadhu Wah, had been completed, while desilting work in Chowkri Bazaar and several other locations was progressing rapidly.
WASA officials briefed the meeting that drainage lines in various parts of Qasimabad were being cleaned with heavy machinery, while the Fasadi Wah Pumping Station was fully operational and ready to handle rainwater disposal.
The meeting also reviewed the strengthening of protective embankments, drainage arrangements in the Railway Colony, preparedness for medical emergencies, uninterrupted electricity supply to pumping stations by HESCO, contingency planning for dilapidated buildings, Cattle Colony and New Cattle Colony, the availability of registered NGO volunteers, and the immediate removal of hazardous billboards across the city.
ADC Gada Hussain Soomro directed all departments to fulfill their responsibilities without delay and ensure the complete implementation of the district’s monsoon emergency plan.
He also instructed the relevant authorities to immediately provide updated lists of registered NGO volunteers and expedite the clearance of unsafe billboards and other potential hazards before the arrival of heavy rains.
The meeting concluded with the decision to convene another review session before the expected rainfall to reassess departmental preparedness and ensure all precautionary measures are fully in place to effectively manage any possible emergency.
