WASHINGTON: U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said the United States is prepared to engage in negotiations with Iran, while stressing the importance of honoring commitments and safeguarding international maritime navigation.
Speaking on the current regional situation, Rubio said that keeping promises and fulfilling commitments is essential to achieving lasting stability.
He also referred to recent incidents in the Strait of Hormuz, stating that commercial vessels had been targeted in the strategic waterway.
Rubio emphasized that the United States would not accept any country’s control over international sea lanes or key maritime passages.
“We will continue to defend the rights of commercial ships and the principle of freedom of navigation,” he said.
The U.S. secretary of state further revealed that Iranian officials had contacted the United States regarding possible negotiations aimed at addressing the current tensions.
According to Rubio, Washington remains open to dialogue, although he did not provide details about the nature, timing, or possible venue of any future talks.
The remarks come amid heightened tensions in the Middle East and growing international concern over maritime security and regional stability.
Neither the U.S. State Department nor Iranian authorities have released additional information regarding the reported diplomatic contacts.
The United States has repeatedly stated that it prefers a diplomatic solution to disputes with Iran while maintaining its commitment to protecting international shipping routes and freedom of navigation in strategic waterways.
