NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court of India has declined to grant an urgent hearing on a petition concerning alleged police action against protesters during demonstrations held on July 20, according to Indian media reports.
The petition relates to protests organized under the banner of the “Cockroach Janata Party,” a youth-led movement that has drawn attention in recent months.
According to Indian media, the Supreme Court also declined to review video footage presented in support of the petition during the request for an urgent hearing.
Chief Justice Surya Kant was quoted as saying:
“We do not have time to watch videos. Please do not waste your time or ours. We have no interest in watching these videos.”
The court’s remarks were made while considering the request for an expedited hearing. The matter may still proceed through the normal judicial process, subject to the court’s schedule.
The protests reportedly involved allegations of excessive use of force by police against demonstrators, prompting legal and political debate.
According to the report, the Cockroach Janata Party emerged earlier this year as an online youth movement following controversy surrounding remarks attributed to Chief Justice Surya Kant.
Reports state that during a court hearing in May, the Chief Justice allegedly referred to some unemployed young people as “cockroaches” and a “burden on society,” triggering widespread criticism and leading to strong reactions from youth groups.
The reported comments became a rallying point for the movement, which has since expanded its focus to include issues such as unemployment, education, and accountability.
The Supreme Court has not issued a detailed order explaining its refusal to hear the petition on an urgent basis. Meanwhile, the allegations regarding police conduct remain a subject of public and political discussion in India.
