KARACHI: A large number of shellfish have washed ashore at Clifton Beach following rough monsoon sea conditions.
WWF technical adviser Moazzam Khan said that strong monsoon waves often bring shellfish to the shoreline. The shellfish found at Clifton are known as blood clams, which have a reddish color due to the presence of hemoglobin.
He explained that blood clams are considered a delicacy in many parts of the world. However, he strongly advised Karachi residents not to consume shellfish collected from the city’s beaches because marine pollution may make them hazardous to human health.
Moazzam Khan also noted that plastic waste and other debris washed ashore with the shellfish are contributing to foul odors and environmental degradation. He warned that Karachi’s marine ecosystem is increasingly being damaged by human activities, leading to a decline in marine life.
