Karachi: NICVD has achieved a historic medical milestone as a patient has fully recovered after spending nine days on ECMO support—a first in Pakistan’s medical history.

According to NICVD spokesperson, this patient is the first in the country to survive after being on ECMO support continuously for nine days. The young patient’s heart and lungs had stopped functioning following cardiac surgery, but thanks to advanced medical care, he made a complete recovery.

The NICVD team employed both VA and VV ECMO simultaneously under the leadership of Dr. Ali Raza Mangi during the complex cardiac procedure. The spokesperson highlighted that the ECMO expert team worked tirelessly day and night to save the patient’s life.

The patient, a resident of Karachi, received fully free treatment at NICVD. This achievement reflects NICVD’s state-of-the-art facilities, Sindh government support, and broader public health efforts.

NICVD continues to provide free cardiac care with advanced facilities and remains a pioneer in cardiac innovations in Pakistan.
