SUKKUR: An elderly woman was injured after falling into an uncovered sewer near Shikarpur Phatak in the Goli Mar area of Sukkur on Friday night, triggering strong public criticism of the Sukkur Municipal Corporation and the concerned Town Committee over alleged negligence in maintaining public infrastructure.

According to reports, the woman was returning home after purchasing household groceries when she accidentally fell into the open sewer. The area was reportedly engulfed in darkness due to non-functional streetlights, making it impossible for her to notice the uncovered drain.

Hearing her cries for help, nearby residents and passersby rushed to the scene. A group of local youths immediately launched a rescue effort and safely pulled the woman out of the sewer. She sustained injuries in the incident, while her shawl and the household items she had purchased were swept away into the drain.

The injured woman said she had been on her way home after shopping for daily necessities when the accident occurred because the open sewer was not visible in the dark. She expressed distress over the loss of her belongings in addition to the injuries she suffered.

Following the incident, residents of the area staged a strong protest against the alleged negligence of the Sukkur Municipal Corporation and the relevant Town Committee. They claimed that several uncovered sewers across different parts of the city continue to pose a serious threat to pedestrians and motorists, increasing the risk of accidents.

Residents further stated that ensuring the safety of citizens is the responsibility of the concerned civic authorities. They alleged that despite repeated complaints, dangerous open sewers and faulty streetlights have not been repaired, forcing people to face unnecessary risks on a daily basis.

The protesters demanded that all uncovered sewers in Sukkur be fitted with durable covers without delay. They also urged the authorities to restore non-functional streetlights and implement effective emergency measures to prevent similar incidents and ensure the safety of the public.
