WASHINGTON: A U.S. newspaper has claimed that President Donald Trump is considering the possibility of deploying American ground forces to Iran, citing unnamed U.S. officials familiar with internal discussions.
According to the report, the proposal under consideration involves sending ground troops to seize Iranian islands near the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically vital waterway through which a significant portion of the world’s oil and gas shipments pass. Speaking to reporters, President Trump said Iran would be defeated soon and claimed that Tehran was seeking talks with Washington.
“Iran wants a meeting. They want to settle the matter. We will see whether we reach an agreement with them or not,” Trump said.
The U.S. president also welcomed Iran’s reported release of an American woman who had been detained during the Biden administration, describing the move as a gesture of goodwill.
“We appreciate Iran’s goodwill in releasing the American woman,” Trump said.
When asked by journalists whether he had set a deadline for potential strikes on Iranian bridges or infrastructure, Trump declined to provide one.
“I don’t like giving deadlines,” he said, adding that Iran should improve its behavior and that its leadership was fully aware of the current situation.
The reported deliberations come as military tensions between the United States and Iran continue to escalate.
Earlier, the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that American forces had carried out another strike against targets in Iran. According to CENTCOM, the operation was aimed at degrading military capabilities that allegedly posed a threat to ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian media reported explosions in several locations, including Sirik, Ahvaz, Chabahar, and Bandar Abbas, following the latest U.S. attacks.
