Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt has opened up about one of the most frightening experiences of his life, recalling a chilling incident from his time behind bars. The 66-year-old actor, who spent several years in prison following his conviction in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts case, revealed during an appearance on The Great Indian Kapil Show that the task of shaving his beard in jail had once been assigned to a fellow inmate who was serving a life sentence for double murder.
Dutt explained that the event remains etched in his memory as one of the scariest moments of his incarceration. “In prison, you are made to follow a strict routine. At one point, my beard had grown too much, and it needed to be shaved. The authorities handed over the job to another prisoner named Mishra,” he recounted.
The actor recalled that it was only when Mishra placed a razor against his neck that he casually asked him how long he had been in jail. “He replied, ‘Fifteen years.’ Out of curiosity, I asked him why. And that’s when he said—‘for double murder.’ The moment those words hit me, my entire body shivered. I immediately grabbed his hand to stop him from moving the blade across my neck,” Dutt said.
The revelation stunned the audience, who listened as the actor described the mix of fear and helplessness he felt at that moment. Although the incident ended without harm, Dutt admitted that the memory still sends shivers down his spine decades later.
Prison Years and Conviction
Sanjay Dutt was sentenced to five years in prison for the illegal possession and subsequent destruction of firearms linked to the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts, one of the deadliest terror attacks in India’s history. While he was acquitted of terrorism charges under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA), he was convicted under the Arms Act.
Dutt served his sentence in Yerwada Central Jail in Pune, where he reportedly adhered to the routine of an ordinary prisoner—taking on assigned jobs, eating standard prison meals, and living under strict surveillance. The incident with the convicted murderer highlighted the dangers and unpredictability of daily life in jail, even for a celebrity inmate.
The Actor’s Biggest Regret
During the same show, when asked about his biggest regret in life, Dutt said he had none regarding his own choices or career. “I don’t regret anything in my life, except losing my parents too early,” he shared emotionally.
Sanjay Dutt’s mother, legendary actress Nargis, passed away in 1981 after battling cancer, just days before his debut film Rocky was released. His father, the veteran actor and politician Sunil Dutt, died in 2005. Their absence, he explained, remains the deepest sorrow of his life.
A Life of Highs and Lows
Sanjay Dutt’s life has been a saga of extreme highs and lows—stardom in Bollywood, brushes with the law, personal struggles with substance abuse, and eventual redemption. His life story was even adapted into the 2018 biopic Sanju, which portrayed his turbulent journey and eventual comeback.
Yet, despite his cinematic success and resilience, the haunting memory of that razor incident inside prison remains one of the darkest chapters in his personal narrative. It serves as a reminder of the harsh realities he endured during his incarceration, and the thin line that separated life from danger in those years.
