Pakistan and Iran on Tuesday agreed to expand agricultural trade and deepen bilateral cooperation in key sectors, including agriculture, livestock, food security, agricultural research and trade facilitation.

The agreement was reached during a high-level meeting between Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain and Iranian Minister of Agriculture Gholamreza Nouri Qazleja. The meeting reviewed the progress of ongoing agricultural cooperation and explored new opportunities to promote bilateral trade.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening economic ties and implementing existing agreements to ensure that farmers, traders, and consumers in both countries benefit from enhanced cooperation.

During the meeting, Rana Tanveer Hussain recalled his official visit to Iran in 2025, during which both countries agreed to expand bilateral trade in major agricultural commodities. He said Iran had expressed interest in importing Pakistani rice, mangoes and meat to meet its growing domestic demand.

The federal minister said Pakistan possesses significant agricultural production capacity and is fully capable of supplying high-quality agricultural products to the Iranian market.

Iranian Agriculture Minister Gholamreza Nouri Qazleja reaffirmed his country’s commitment to importing meat from Pakistan, stating that Pakistan has the potential to meet nearly 60 per cent of Iran’s total meat import requirements. He expressed confidence in the quality of Pakistani livestock products and their compliance with international standards, while stressing the need to establish effective trade mechanisms to ensure uninterrupted supplies.

The two ministers reviewed the progress made under previous agreements and decided that the commitments outlined in the joint declaration would be implemented within the next two months. They directed the relevant institutions to expedite administrative and technical procedures to remove barriers to trade.

The Iranian minister also appreciated Pakistan’s constructive role in promoting regional peace and stability and thanked the Government of Pakistan for its efforts to foster regional harmony and cooperation.

The meeting reviewed the progress of the Pakistan-Iran Joint Working Committee on Agriculture. The Iranian minister noted that the committee had already been established and emphasized the need to make it fully operational so that agreed objectives could be achieved within the stipulated timeframe. Both sides agreed to hold regular meetings of the committee and strengthen coordination between experts and relevant institutions.

Rana Tanveer Hussain said enhanced agricultural cooperation between Pakistan and Iran would contribute significantly to regional food security, increased investment, technology transfer, and sustainable economic development. He reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to expanding bilateral trade and strengthening institutional cooperation in the agriculture and livestock sectors.

Both ministers expressed satisfaction with the positive trajectory of Pakistan-Iran relations and agreed to continue close cooperation to fully harness the potential of agricultural trade, encourage greater private sector participation, and further strengthen bilateral ties.
