Beijing: Zhang Yiming, the founder of ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, has reportedly overtaken India’s billionaire industrialist Mukesh Ambani to become the second richest person in Asia, according to Bloomberg data cited in recent reports.
The surge in his wealth comes amid a sharp rise in ByteDance’s valuation, driven by strong business performance and rapid growth in its artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives.
Massive Jump in Wealth
According to Bloomberg, Zhang Yiming’s net worth increased significantly due to a rise in ByteDance’s share value and growing investor confidence in the company’s AI-driven expansion.
In a single day alone, his wealth reportedly jumped by $24.1 billion, bringing his total net worth to approximately $92.8 billion.
So far this year, his wealth has increased by $27.7 billion, placing him not only as the second richest person in Asia but also among the top 25 richest individuals in the world, ranked around 21st globally.
Mukesh Ambani Slips to Third in Asia
In contrast, Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani, chairman of Reliance Industries, has seen a decline in his net worth.
Reports suggest that Ambani’s wealth has decreased by around $20.8 billion this year, bringing his total fortune to approximately $86.9 billion.
As a result, he now ranks as the third richest person in Asia and around 25th globally.
Meanwhile, India’s Gautam Adani remains the richest person in Asia with an estimated net worth of $117 billion, ranking 17th in the world.
AI Growth Behind ByteDance’s Success
A major factor behind ByteDance’s rising valuation is the company’s expanding presence in artificial intelligence technologies.
One of its most notable products, the AI chatbot and assistant “Doubao”, has gained massive popularity in China, reportedly attracting more than 300 million users.
Experts believe that ByteDance’s diversification into AI and digital services is strengthening its position beyond social media and short-video platforms like TikTok.
A Quiet Billionaire with a Simple Background
Despite his immense wealth and global influence, Zhang Yiming is known for maintaining a relatively private and low-profile lifestyle.
Born in 1983 in Fujian province, China, his parents were government employees. His name is inspired by a Chinese saying meaning “to surprise everyone on the first attempt.”
He graduated in software engineering from Nankai University in 2005, after which he began his career as a software engineer at a company called Kuxun, where he was among the early employees.
Early Career and Leadership Experience
Zhang has previously shared that he quickly took on leadership responsibilities early in his career, managing teams of dozens of employees within a short period.
He has said that exposure to product planning, sales, and technical challenges helped him develop a broader understanding of business operations.
These early experiences, he believes, played a key role in shaping his entrepreneurial mindset.
Microsoft Stint and Founding ByteDance
Before launching his own company, Zhang also worked at Microsoft, but eventually left to pursue his entrepreneurial ambitions.
In 2012, he founded ByteDance, a company that would later become one of the world’s most influential technology giants, best known globally for TikTok.
The platform revolutionized short-form video content and quickly expanded into global markets, making ByteDance one of the most valuable tech companies in the world.
Even He Didn’t Initially Use TikTok
Interestingly, Zhang has admitted that he was not an active early user of TikTok.
He once said he rarely watched or uploaded videos on the platform, believing it was mainly designed for younger users.
However, as the platform grew, ByteDance eventually encouraged internal engagement, requiring employees to use and understand the app more actively.
Zhang has described this shift as an important step in better understanding the product and its users.
A Tech Visionary Behind a Global Platform
Zhang Yiming’s journey from a software engineer to one of Asia’s richest individuals reflects the rapid rise of China’s tech industry and the global influence of digital platforms.
With ByteDance expanding into AI and new technologies, his wealth and influence continue to grow, reshaping the global rankings of billionaires and highlighting the power of innovation in the modern digital economy.
