Kolkata: Political tensions in India’s West Bengal state have intensified following a change in government, with senior leaders of the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) reportedly facing attacks during public engagements.
According to Indian media reports, Abhishek Banerjee, Member of Parliament and nephew of former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, was allegedly assaulted while visiting Sonarpur to meet families affected by post-election violence.
Reports state that a group of protesters confronted Banerjee during the visit. The crowd allegedly threw eggs at him, physically attacked him, and damaged his clothing. The situation reportedly became so tense that security personnel took additional measures to protect him, with Banerjee reportedly wearing a helmet amid the unrest.
Another TMC Leader Injured
In a separate incident, TMC legislator Kalyan Banerjee was also reportedly attacked, sustaining a head injury. Details regarding the circumstances of the attack remain limited, but the incident has added to concerns about political violence in the state.
Rising Political Tensions
The reported attacks come after recent elections in West Bengal that resulted in a significant political shift. According to the reports, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) defeated the TMC, ending the party’s long period of dominance in the state.
Mamata Banerjee had been one of West Bengal’s most influential political figures and, according to the report, had served as Chief Minister for approximately 15 years before the change in government.
Concerns Over Political Violence
Political violence has historically been a sensitive issue in West Bengal, particularly during and after elections. Incidents involving clashes between rival political supporters have frequently drawn criticism from civil society groups and opposition parties.
The latest reports are likely to fuel further debate over security, political freedoms, and the treatment of opposition figures in the state. Authorities have not yet released comprehensive details regarding the incidents, and investigations may be required to establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged attacks.
