New Delhi: India’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested an Army Ordnance Corps colonel in Kolkata over allegations of corruption and bribery linked to military contracts and tenders.

According to Indian media reports, the arrested officer has been identified as Colonel Himanshu Bali of the Army Ordnance Corps.

The reports stated that the officer is accused of accepting a bribe worth 5 million Indian rupees in connection with the awarding of contracts.

Indian newspaper reports further claimed that Colonel Bali and several other officials are under investigation for allegedly receiving large bribes in exchange for granting tenders.

The Central Bureau of Investigation, which is India’s primary federal investigative agency, reportedly carried out the arrest as part of an anti-corruption operation.

Authorities have not yet released complete details regarding the nature of the contracts involved or the identities of other suspects allegedly connected to the case.

However, initial reports suggest the investigation relates to procurement and tendering processes within the military supply system.

The Army Ordnance Corps is responsible for providing logistical support, weapons, ammunition, and equipment to the Indian Army.

Corruption allegations involving defense procurement are considered highly sensitive in India due to the large financial value of military contracts and concerns regarding transparency in the defense sector.

According to media reports, investigators are examining whether the accused officials misused their positions to favor certain contractors in exchange for financial benefits.

The arrest has drawn significant attention in India, where corruption cases involving government institutions and defense officials often trigger political and public debate.

Legal experts say the case could expand further if investigators uncover additional evidence involving procurement irregularities or financial misconduct.

Indian authorities have not yet announced whether formal charges have been filed in court, but the investigation is reportedly ongoing.

Defense analysts note that corruption allegations in military procurement can damage public trust and raise concerns about accountability within sensitive institutions.

The CBI frequently investigates cases involving bribery, abuse of authority, financial fraud, and corruption involving public officials across various sectors in India.

Reports indicate that investigators may also review financial records, tender approvals, and communications related to the alleged bribery scheme.

No official statement from the Indian Army regarding the arrest had been widely reported immediately after the development.

The case comes amid continued scrutiny of procurement procedures and transparency mechanisms in India’s defense establishment.
