PESHAWAR: Leaders of the Tehreek-e-Tahafuz-e-Ayeen-e-Pakistan (TTAP) on Friday announced protests against the imposition of emergency and governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, describing the move as “unconstitutional and illegal.”

Opposition Leader in the National Assembly and Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party Chairman Mahmood Khan Achakzai said the alliance had also challenged the measures in the Peshawar High Court.

Addressing a news conference in Peshawar alongside leaders of other parties in the opposition alliance, Achakzai said the imposition of emergency and governor’s rule had removed what he described as the country’s only government elected on the basis of the public mandate.

The federal government imposed emergency and governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on October 11. Government leaders have repeatedly cited the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-led provincial government’s alleged lack of cooperation in the fight against terrorism, amid deteriorating law and order in the province, as justification for the decision.

Achakzai alleges electoral manipulation

A day after the imposition of governor’s rule, Achakzai had announced a public and democratic struggle against the decision while expressing readiness to hold talks to resolve political disputes.

Speaking outside Parliament House in Islamabad alongside other opposition leaders, he had said the alliance was prepared for negotiations to resolve political issues and build a “democratic Pakistan”.

He had also assured the public that the movement would remain peaceful, saying its members would neither abuse anyone, fire bullets nor throw stones.

At Friday’s news conference, Achakzai alleged that power had been seized through the use of money and force in the 2024 general elections.

He claimed that various tactics had been employed to keep the PTI out of power, including depriving it of its election symbol.

Despite these measures, he said, the PTI had won more than 97 National Assembly seats. He added that the party’s strength in the lower house had subsequently declined following cases and convictions against its successful candidates.

Calls for provincial rights and unity

Achakzai said the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the former tribal areas had the right to their region’s natural resources.

He called for local communities to be taken into confidence before minerals were exploited or agreements involving those resources were signed, adding that residents should receive a share in the benefits.

He also argued that people living along rivers should have the first right to their water, claiming that farmers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were unable to access water in their own areas.

“Pashtuns built Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Lahore and Karachi,” he said, adding that they were nevertheless not considered good Pakistanis.

Achakzai urged all political parties to set aside their differences and unite in demanding an end to governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

He also called for the detained provincial chief minister and members of the provincial assembly to be brought before the public.

Emphasising the need to protect Pakistan’s sovereignty and survival, Achakzai said all state institutions should remain within the roles assigned to them by the Constitution.
