PESHAWAR: Advocate Bashir Wazir, who had filed habeas corpus petitions seeking the recovery of deposed Chief Minister Sohail Afridi and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Speaker Babar Saleem Swati, was allegedly abducted from outside the Peshawar High Court on Wednesday, lawyers told the court.

Members of the Insaf Lawyers Forum appeared before the high court’s chief justice and raised concerns over Wazir’s alleged abduction.

Advocate Inam Yousafzai told the chief justice that Wazir had been taken away from outside the high court.

The chief justice directed the lawyers to file a formal application detailing the incident and return to the court. He also instructed them to include eyewitness accounts in their application.

Yousafzai assured the court that the lawyers would submit the application.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) also shared a video on X, describing it as footage of Wazir’s alleged abduction.

“Footage of the abduction of Advocate Bashir Wazir, who yesterday filed habeas corpus petitions seeking the recovery of the abducted Chief Minister and Speaker of the KP Assembly. He himself has been abducted in broad daylight outside the Peshawar High Court,” the party said.

“This is a grave assault on the rule of law, the independence of the legal profession and the administration of justice,” it added.

The alleged abduction comes amid uncertainty surrounding the whereabouts and detention of several PTI leaders in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa following the imposition of emergency and governor’s rule in the province on October 11.

Petitions filed for recovery of Afridi, Swati

The development comes a day after separate petitions were filed in the Peshawar High Court seeking the recovery of Afridi and Swati.

According to the petitions, both leaders were allegedly taken away by armed and masked men in the presence of Peshawar Capital City Police Officer (CCPO).

Afridi’s brother, Muhammad Aamir, filed a petition through Wazir, seeking the former chief minister’s immediate recovery, his production before the court and an independent investigation into the circumstances of his alleged abduction.

A separate petition was filed by Swati’s cousin, Waqar Ahmed Khan, through Wazir, seeking the assembly speaker’s recovery and an investigation into his alleged abduction.

The petitions seek judicial intervention to establish the leaders’ whereabouts, determine the circumstances of their reported detention and examine its legality.

The allegations contained in the petitions have yet to be established in court.
