A bizarre mystery in the United States has left museum officials and social media users puzzled after a car that has reportedly remained parked inside a museum for years received a traffic violation ticket from New York.
The unusual case involves a black vehicle modeled after the famous car from the 1980s television series Knight Rider.
According to reports, the replica vehicle has been displayed for years at the Volo Museum near Chicago and has not been driven on public roads. However, museum management recently received a $50 speeding ticket connected to the car’s license plate.
The traffic citation claimed that a vehicle with the same registration number was caught speeding on a New York road on April 22.
Adding to the mystery, the traffic camera image attached to the ticket reportedly showed a black vehicle that looked almost identical to the Knight Rider replica parked inside the museum.
Officials at the museum said they were shocked because the car has remained stationary for years and could not possibly have been driving in New York.
Even more surprisingly, authorities noted that the same license plate had reportedly been linked to five additional traffic violations during late 2024.
It remains unclear how another vehicle in New York appears to be using the same registration number as the museum’s famous display car.
Museum representatives described the situation as both strange and unexpectedly entertaining.
“The legal issues we are facing because of a TV car replica are quite interesting,” museum officials said. “We have no idea how a car parked in Chicago could be violating traffic laws in New York.”
They added that they are now trying to determine who may have recreated the vehicle and whether someone intentionally copied the Knight Rider car along with its license plate.
“We are trying to find out who is driving this Knight Rider car,” the museum stated. “It appears someone may have built an extremely accurate replica as a hobby.”
The bizarre incident has sparked widespread curiosity online, with many social media users joking that the legendary Knight Rider car may have somehow come to life.
The original Knight Rider television series became globally popular during the 1980s and featured a futuristic, intelligent talking car known as KITT, driven by actor David Hasselhoff’s character Michael Knight.
Because of the show’s popularity, replica versions of the iconic black Pontiac Trans Am continue to attract collectors and fans around the world.
Experts believe the mystery may involve license plate duplication, unauthorized replication, or registration fraud, though no official explanation has yet been confirmed.
Authorities are expected to investigate how the same license plate became associated with a vehicle in another state and whether the matter involves identity theft or misuse of vehicle registration information.
